<image:caption>There are 12 magazine-titled poems in The Bluestone Walk. Each of the twelve is written in a different style. And each involves different magazine, piece of furniture, and an article of woman’s clothing. Add in sensuality, longing, mystery and love — and hopefully the whole is weightier than the parts.</image:caption>

<image:title>Future Books - At the Tomb of the Acorn</image:title>
<image:caption>The scraggly squirrel is my mentor. He has fallen from the nest and scrambles as best he can through the leaves with a limp. His nose can still sniff, but his lax tail drags sadly behind. I have mastered his acorn and hold it in my pocket with dexterity. I am free to be myself without faith and have opened a small shop at the corner of Fallen-from-Grace and Divine. It is here in the leaves beneath his tree. Penny ante and a small cough. How often in movies do small coughs denote death? The leaves are turning in the wind. They flash sensations, secret memories. But the most pressing memories are gone, promises broken. Having ruined the doll’s hair with neglect, the child hauls it aloft with a string, one minute hopping spastically in the grass, the next riding slowly upward to the window, where fingers dangle and laughter falls. Where shall we bury your acorn? Its little hat is the memorial marker to remember life by. You have taught me all I know, all that I thought I knew. And you pocket my string for adventure. You taught me how to fall from the nest, how to limp into the soul of dry leaves to bring them to life. From now until then, I will follow your every pause to perfection. And after, when you are gone, I will circle your tree forever faithful in search of your acorn tomb, so that I too—like you— can wear a little hat and start from scratch, scraping as best I can through the leaves with a limp, straight for you.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Early Poems - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>“Leaving the Train Behind” arose out of a four-month hitchhiking trip across Canada and US that I took when I was 18. During the trip, I was invited by some folks I met in California to join them for a week hiking in the Sierra Nevada mountains, which I did (see picture). I hadn’t planned to return home, but I did return. I had no idea what I wanted to be, “for money,” and so I enrolled in the local community college to make my mother happy while I debated my future. At that time, my main interest was composing music, reading books of mysticism, and dreaming of a different life. As an undergraduate, I was asked by my professor, the poet Alan Feldman, to do a poetry reading with him as part of an exchange program with other Massachusetts state universities. It was my first public reading and because it was part of an English program, the audience was quite large. My mind was numb. One of the poems I read was “Leaving the Train Behind.” The memory stands out for me as this was the first time that I received a standing ovation for a poem.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is a picture of me at 23 in a room I rented in a boarding house. I didn’t want roommates and I couldn’t afford an apartment by myself, and so this suited me perfectly. The boarding house was located near a veteran’s hospital, and so most of the other renters were veterans who had fought in the Vietnam or Korean wars. They were all fascinating people, even though some unfortunately had severe psychological problems from their war experience. The cement frog statue pictured on my bookcase made its way into a poem of mine years later, long after the frog was gone, to where I do not know.</image:caption>

<image:title>Reviews of My Books - Through One Tear: Poems Edward Nobles, Author Persea Books $22 (80p) ISBN 978-0-89255-227-6</image:title>
<image:caption>This challenging first collection grapples with large questions in unexpected ways. “Is heritage the honing or the rusting of the blade?” Nobles asks in one poem. In another: “How can we/ trick you/ into your self,//dear life?” For the skeptical but hopeful Nobles, however, the central question is the value of life: “How to make a moment matter? Tears, toil, darkness/ can't do it. Nor tradition. Nor lines around/ the eyes and mouth.” Trying to answer such questions, Nobles turns to the figure of the artist, whom he often dramatizes as a warrior. He writes of Ezra Pound, the surrealists, Van Gogh. He finds that “The ship moves/ against the sea. And the men,/ those bleak anomalies, move within the ship.” The core of this outstanding collection are the poems in which Nobles addresses the question of faith and in which his sardonic wit and yearning for meaning play against each other in powerful ways. He argues with himself: “The soul/ is something. Must be/ something. At least/ a dream/ in a small, thin/ box. You cannot/ see, but feel/ its buzz/ die when you/ block/ your heart's ear.” In “Thorn of Light,” a poem reminiscent of fellow New Englander Robert Frost, Nobles's inner argument comes to an uneasy conclusion as he writes of walking down a path through the woods and realizing that “each and every tree can be transformed/ into a Cross/ if we could only find the interest.” (June)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Greetings and welcome to my world. Or one of my worlds, as life consists of multiple galaxies with complex nuances and layers. And beneath the galactic layers, one bedrock essence of who I am is “poet,” someone who searches for answers through a few choice words, the proverbial universe sculpted from a grain of sand. If this website appears at times to you, as it does to me, like boasting, I hope you will forgive me. And that you’ll still join me in the planting of my poet’s flag on a handful of dust hurtling through space. Because, even since the beginning, this journey is meant for both of us.</image:caption>
